The Developing World Cant Be In a State of Stupor

In Deep Sleep, They Hope to Awaken

My country I love. It is unique. It will be a giant one day, watch out. 

It has everything great that makes a leadership global nation. There are many things worse in the world outside. See the good, unique and the exclusiveness in mine! 

Every Asian Indian can see that in their pulse. Beyond the Indian, there is a larger world around you that sings and swings a similar tune.

It is a cultural addiction- across over a hundred world nations. Very distinct from the other world that evolves by methods, practices and goals. A little beyond -  by  vision, a roadmap and mileposts defined. 

Governments are lazy around the world. 

Yet what keeps the Governments on their toes is its consciously aware citizens who speak in a language indicative, polite and persuasive. They would compel not by the resonance but by an authentic and honest demand for a reason or a rationale. 

That perhaps is why development strikes in Europe and the USA, some South East Asian nations, another few in the West Asia, yet another few and scattered in the periphery. 

Their sense of pride, hope and faith comes from what they have done to develop, grow or evolve. And for what they have achieved for its people or accomplished for its glory with the view to stay above the mediocre.

The benchmarks could be several, but there is a belief in civilised human behaviour, respect for human status, enhanced lifestyles, superior quality of public systems, respect for law, trust in justice, honest regulatory mechanisms, and better sciences and technologies. 

They dont then roll call incidents, situations, drama to make believe.

Cast that against the developing countries around the world, at least those I saw: in the closer neighbourhood of India and countries in Africa or South America. Their sense of pride or faith comes from a display of Western lifestyles and what prospers in the best select lanes.  


Beyond that lies a sea of poverty, limitations and human cry. 

Over a dinner you would be proven by Ten best reasons for plenty to succeed in commerce, lifestyle or standards. Why there is everything exists so well, except its acceptance.


Sri Lanka or Botswana or Zambia, they present strong case for why a good business could invest in them and prosper. 

At the other end of the spectrum is the pride of a genuine glory. Glory that has existed for over a thousand long years.  Of cultures, ethnicity and civilisation. That glory good in its history will not make the poor man sail off its misery.

But to see beyond what exists - is truly beyond the scope of a possibility.


The Governments, opinion leaders and the thinkers appear to be blind to the idea that what stays decays. The new must evolve successively as a reason for continuity of evolvement. 


Making ends meet is a lazy regime that comes as a compulsion to attend than as a choice to make the way. 

The Government, democratic or not, would stay closeted in the motley of such a group of people or lobbies. That group then forms what may be referred to as a banana republic limited its nationhood to an engineered society. The rest of the nation lingers amidst borrowed plans of subsidies or charities.


The august company then sponsors or patronises a few as a king must its subjects.  As many then live under the umbrage of the country’s most respected, revered and sought after; their names flaunted and their powers celebrated. 


Instances of London, New York or Geneva may be quoted or debated. The art of an accent and narrative craft emerges as a language of its own that serves three: open the doors to the West, or win over arguments over people who are shut from information; and, play with the Press who swings between I could get there and I just missed it.  

The language is a promising one that offers a world, a dream and a castle for all. One day they will be the USA, and very soon.

As a citizen of the world I protest. I protest as that makes the world susceptible and vulnerable to poverty, misery and slavery. It is down right anti-human in rights, liberty or freedom.

Endowed by its sheer size India, my native home and land, stands a vivid example of this clan of nations.


Where all processes are in disagreement with the need to liberate its people from misery and slavery - political, economic or social.

A Sovereign nation, elected by a democratic process that entrusts various free roles is mere definition. That lives well in the grammar and vocabulary. Not as a delivered process.   

Then, is it time to ask if democracy means adhering to fill in the blanks, or is that a process to comply?  

Can a Government that leads 1.2 Billion people stand alone from its responsibilities towards well being of its major share of the world people? Will a few billion deprived people not sway away the world prosperity?  

As a citizen of the world, should it not become a responsibility of every people that their Governments own the status and go beyond the status quo? And that they bend their ways to contribute to the world prosperity - no matter in what degree.

As a large segment of potentially capable people must get an opportunity as their right to contribute to world prosperity, peace and equanimity. At least an opportunity enough to make better than stand still.

These are questions I ask as I see the pain of trusting a sizeable people in incapable hands or hands that know not what to yield. 

Not in 2012, but since 1947, I see India stay lame as opportunities passed by in real.

If a take a look at the world figures that tell a story: A nation that promises to be the future of the world cannot afford to cut such a sorry figure, decade after decade. Just as the other several hundred nations.

The story is painful as the conditions of the developing nation sits on deep sleep, slumber or stupor, even as the nomenclature of poor nations have been let off their shoulders.

Democracy: India is not in the list of top 25 Full Democracy nations but among Flawed Democracies ranking 39 in the overall list (The Economist Intelligence Unit Report 2011) in the company of Taiwan, Slovakia above and Lithuania and Cyprus under its ranks.

Education: The Sub Index of Legatum Institute 2011 as a study to evaluate how education standards helps drive social development in a country, India ranks 88 in the company of Paraguay and Namibia above and Guatemala and Cambodia under its ranks. 

Law & Justice: In the Rule of Law Index of the World Justice Project 2011 – India ranks 46-66 across the various parameters among selected 68 countries around the world regions. Its neighbourhood once again are those countries that may nauseate the pride of most Indians.

Global Cities: ATKearney Global Cities Index 2012 sees Mumbai at 45 is ahead of New Delhi with Tel Aviv and Oska between the two.

Human Development: The UN Index 2011 rates India at 134 in the company of Ghana and Iraq.

A more comprehensive Globalisation Ratings, a joint initiative of ATKerney and ForeignPolicy Magazine, for 2011 that measures the global connectivity, integration and interdependence in the economic, social, technological, cultural, political, and ecological spheres, finds India at 113 among Belarus,  Cuba and Senegal.

If the world has to be prosperous as a whole, the developing world must awake. And its people must first.
